A safe and non-judgemental environment

I treat young adults, adults and couples. We can meet face to face or online, whichever you prefer. I work with both UK residents and people living outside of the UK.

Working both from my own private practice and within the NHS, I cover two large GP practices in London. Referrals from health professionals are always welcome.

I can help you in a safe and non-judgemental space. Text me, call me or message me if you need more information.

See what my patients have to say:

I had anxiety about ending up alone in the future and an inability to find love.

Charlie helped me manage my emotions, giving me coping strategies to rationalise my thoughts and helped me to see things more clearly.

I now feel calmer, more at peace and happier. I am able to manage situations on my own better using practices Charlie does so well without the negative self-judgement I used to have.

He is always there to guide me to find the answers for myself.

– SB

Charlie was very understanding about my struggle with food.

We went through a load of things that were upsetting me to work out what was the real reason for my problem.

He is helping me not to try to control too much and supporting me with my social confidence while the other guys are watching my diet

– FM

‘I have been struggling with confidence and self-acceptance, despite being very outgoing, for quite some time. When the pandemic started, familiar feelings seemed to multiply at a faster rate, and I knew I needed to figure out what was happening and how to work through it.

Charlie has been a massive help in my CBT journey. We tried a few approaches when we initially spoke, and we quickly found a rhythm that worked well for my strengths and challenges. Since working with Charlie, I realise that there are a handful of recurring issues I have that are intertwined. Charlie has been instrumental in helping me identify patterns of my negative thinking and providing me with various tools to combat those irrational beliefs.

The outcome of my CBT therapy is ever-evolving. I now appreciate that irrational beliefs in my mind, are solely my own creation. There will always be unexpected challenges around the corner, in some capacity. However, I am using my newly found and appreciated cognitive skills to deal with those challenges, however big or small, accordingly.’

Discover A New Therapy Philosophy

Why work with me?

My aim, when I work with you, is to help you. I am passionate about you building your confidence and approach to life, work, relationships and eating. You will learn a new positive approach to life, work, relationships and eating through talking therapy, designed specifically for you.

For each of your therapy sessions, we will look at how you think about problems and life in general. Together, we will use various therapies, including Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT), which is a deeper version of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

We’ll work in a calm and relaxed manner, so you feel comfortable enough to share your problems. Our aim in talking therapy is to change your philosophy to life and make you feel emotionally better.

Meet Charlie Stopford (cbt)

Before working as a therapist, I worked in the corporate world for companies including Unilever, Vodafone and Accenture. After figuring out that my calling in life lay in helping others, I added to my MA in Philosophy from the University of St. Andrews. I hold a Diploma in REBT and an Advanced Diploma in REBT, graduating with the Highest Distinction from the College of CBT (CCBT).

From there, I moved on to work in private practice, both in-person and online. I also work for two large NHS GP practices in London. Most of my clients are from personal recommendations or from health care professionals.

Whether you are looking for your own personal therapy or a health professional looking to refer a patient, feel free to call, text or email me.

What sort of therapy do I practice?

diverse-help

Finding your own therapy mission

The main type of therapy I choose to work with is a form of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), known as rational emotive behavioural therapy (REBT). REBT is more in-depth than most cognitive therapies. It looks at the way you think about problems and your approach to life in general.

Together we start by looking at what you are thinking and feeling, which is the approach in all types of cognitive behavioural therapy. With rational emotive behavioural therapy, we go deeper to discover what is behind the way you think. In other words, the precise cause of your emotional distress.

We’ll look at your emotions and establish how healthy they are. Together we will then explore your belief system and develop a new positive one. You will begin to feel emotionally healthy and no longer feel to put yourself down, someone else down or the world down.

If they complement CBT and REBT, I also use other techniques from other types of therapy. It’s all about you finding your own therapy mission. Together, we will find the best way for you to move forwards to a happier state of mind.

Anxiety therapy

We’ll work together to find your deepest worries. By using your own mind, you can change your attitude to your problem. I’ll coach you with techniques that will really work for you, including facing your issues in real life. We’ll aim to bring your anxiety level down from 8/10 to 1/10.

Relationship and Couples therapy

For couples facing problems in their relationship, therapy aims to work through issues by looking at both perspectives. By developing compassion for yourself and your partner, you will be able to start mapping out where your relationship is heading. Ultimately, you will find a happier future together and a healthy way to deal with your current situation.

Eating disorder therapy

The approach of the NHS, when dealing with eating disorders, centres around calorie intake. Eating disorders can be complex and talking therapy is an essential part of the healing process. By understanding the source of pain, which is often harrowing and traumatic, we can work on how it is causing the eating disorder. Using deep empathy and a gentle approach, issues can be dealt with, allowing you to move on with your life.

COVID therapy

The Coronavirus is linked to much mental anguish. Whether you have anxiety over catching Covid or you’re struggling with the effects of being ‘locked down’, we can use talking therapy to overcome your worries.

If you suffer from psychological issues caused by catching Covid or long Covid, using REBT will help you through your darkest days. We’ll work together to guide you forwards so you can be your best and fulfil your emotional potential.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Often known as CBT, cognitive behavioural therapy works around the concept that feelings, thoughts, physical sensations and actions are all interconnected. When these thoughts are negative, a person can feel trapped by their own way of thinking.

Using CBT helps a person deal with overwhelming problems in their life by breaking them down into smaller chunks. I work at changing negative patterns to improve the way a person feels.

Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy

REBT is a type of CBT founded by Albert Ellis. When using this therapy, we go deeper than standard CBT by identifying the reason for the patient’s distress in their belief system, i.e. what is behind their flawed way of thinking. REBT aims to change the irrational belief system to a rational one, thus completely defeating the flawed thinking, not just reducing it.

Unlike standard CBT, REBT distinguishes between unhealthy and healthy emotions. It also distinguishes between ego disturbance, e.g. self-downing and discomfort disturbance, e.g. not tolerating things. The whole ethos of REBT is founded on self-acceptance and acceptance of other people and life.

In addition to REBT, I use techniques from the following modalities:

  • Trauma - EMDR
  • Schema
  • CT
  • Mindfulness
  • Acceptance and Commitment
  • Compassion Focussed
  • Solution - Focused

If you have any questions about the types of therapy I use or to arrange a referral, please get in touch.
